In the first panel, a man in a suit urgently speaks into a candlestick telephone, saying "CENTRAL? F-I-R-E!! 23 B-E-R-N-E STREET!" There's a sign beside him indicating it's an emergency call.
The second panel shows the same man, now with smoke billowing around him, repeating his message to Central about the fire on Berne Street.
The third panel is similar to the second, with the man now almost completely engulfed in thick smoke, still trying to report the fire.
In the fourth panel, the man has disappeared into the smoke, with only his feet and the bottom of the telephone visible. From the smoke, a speech bubble emerges with the telephone operator's voice calmly asking, "NUMBER, PLEASE?"
