This painting is not directly a photo of myself, but over time I have begun to accept it as a self-portrait. I titled it ‘After Hours’, an ode to the Velvet Underground song with the same name. As it is a painting it is meant to be analyzed, and that everything you see was put there with a reason and critical thinking. My friends and I were talking one night about what fruits we were as people, and it was decided upon that I was a peach, soft and fuzzy on the outside, but a hard and tough on the inside, and hence I put it in a representation of myself. The knife represents the bad decisions I had made that semester, and the consequences of my own actions, stabbing that tough inter core. It is positioned sort of in the middle, and stands out against the background, drawing the viewers’ attention. There are no people in the painting, just objects such as alcohol cans, cigarettes, an orange, a disco ball, and shoes on the floor. These items represent bad decisions I myself and others have made. The overall tone of the painting is purple and dark blue, so you begin to get the sense that it is late at night, and the party is over. It was painted last March, which was a period in my time where I was dealing with many consequences that come after a night of partying, and the drama that ensues after. It is meant to be a simplified version of my friends’ apartment where these parties would take place, and I spent most of my time last semester. This painting means a lot to me and is a great representation of how I felt last year.
